lucida
momenta (1995)
In the past years, I have been working with blurred images produced by taking pictures out of focus. All the pictures from the Lucida momenta exhibition project were consciously made in that way. The blurred close-up pictures are combined into a few big grids (composites) and sequences in order to give them additional narrative possibilities. Some pieces from this project have their own titles (quotations from different literature resourses) what let enrich the process of perception. For example, composition from 12 fragments (total size is ~ 120 x 140 cm.) is accompanied with quotation in French from Arthur Rimbaud's poem: "La musique savante manque a notre desir" ("Our Desires Are Short Of Queer Melody"). A phrase from old Slavonic chronicles which points to the paganish roots of some Christian rituals in Belarus "... i po soshestvii Sviatogo dukha, rekshe po Rusaliikh..." (... upon the Holy Ghost Descent or After the Rusalii...") is used for the vertical sequence of 6 (or 5) pictures (total size is around 180 x 40 cm.). Rusalii is ancient Slavonic word for Midsummer Night Festival. The Latin expression 'lucida momenta' what means 'moments of lucidity', 'moments of epiphany', has given both to the sequence of 8 black and white pictures (total size is around 60 x 160 cm.) and to the whole exhibition project. The sequence is based on manipulations with solar symbol (the general symbol of the whole project) which makes allusion to light nature of photography. Separate works of the project, made in different scales, are aggregated with so-called photographic 'hokku' -- small pictures printed in vertical order on the surface of a sheet of photopaper (what suggest us Japanese writing). The main theme of these photographic hokku is transformation of a a circle which is a symbol of time and which is essential element of the poetry of hokku. Moreover, some fragments of these photographic miniatures repeat the same objects which used in another compositions of the exhibition project. This method is dictated by stylistic of hokku: we repeat the same thought again and again, using different words... This project was exhibited in different galleries such as Fotografisk Galleri (Copenhagen, Denmark), Foto Medium Art (Wroclaw, Poland), Klodzki Osrodek Kultury (Klodzko, Poland) and in State Art Museum (Vitebsk, Belarus). Some fragments of the project were shown on many group exhibition of Belarusian photography abroad.
